Brownell says Mitchell's Clemson career likely over |
Senior guard Shelton Mitchell was unable to play against Wright St in the NIT opener on Tuesday. Clemson head coach Brad Brownell said after Clemson's win that Mitchell has been hurt all year and his Clemson career is likely over.
"We found out yesterday at practice that Shelton is basically done," Brownell said. "He has been hurt all year. It's worse than he has let on. It's worse than I have let on. If you really watch him you can see that he doesn't have the speed he has had the last two years. He has really tried all season to just hang in there and fight. It's been frustrating for him." Brownell said an MRI on Monday showed a problem with Mitchell's meniscus. "He got another MRI on Monday and it showed he is going to have to have another surgery at the end of the season. It's been hard. It's been a hard year in a lot of ways with some stuff like that. I hate it for Shelton because he wants to keep playing but it's tough right now." In action in all 32 games this season, Mitchell ranks third on the Tigers in scoring (11.5) and second in assists per game (3) and free throw percentage (83.3).
